The Word

The Word

Let us pray . . .

Loving God, you say in the Bible that a person cannot live by bread alone, but must also be fed by every word you say. Feed us now with your Word. We ask for the presence of your Holy Spirit so that these words about to be read will become your Word to us in this time and place. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

A reading from the Book of Acts:

The number of students multiplied at that time. It turned out that the Greek Jews started complaining that their widows were being overlooked by the ministry offered by the Palestinian Jews. The Twelve called all of the students together and said, “We’re not going to be happy if we have to abandon preaching God’s Word to act like a bunch of waiters. Fellow-believers, pick seven men with good reputations who are full of the Spirit and full of wisdom, and we’ll put them in charge of dealing with this issue, while we continue the ministry of prayer and preaching the Word.” The whole community agreed with everything that they said. They chose Stephan (a man filled with both faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch (a convert to Judaism). They stood these men in front of the Apostles who prayed for them and ordained them. God’s Word continued to spread and the number of students in Jerusalem kept multiplying more and more. Even a large group of clergy accepted the faith.

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

All you that are righteous, shout for joy for what the Lord has done;
     praise him, all you that obey him.
Give thanks to the Lord with harps,
     sing to him with stringed instruments.

The words of the Lord are true,
     and all his works are dependable.
The Lord loves what is righteous and just;
     his constant love fills the earth.

The Lord watches over those who obey him,
     those who trust in his constant love.
He saves them from death;
     he keeps them alive in times of famine.

A reading from the First letter of St. Peter:

Go to him! He’s the living stone that has been rejected by people, but which has been chosen by God. It’s invaluable to him. Like living stones, let yourselves be built up into a spiritual house. Let yourselves be made into holy members of the ordained clergy, offering up spiritual sacrifices that God finds acceptable through Jesus the Anointed King. Because it says in the Bible:

    “Check it out! I’m putting a stone in Zion
        The stone that holds everything together,
            Chosen and invaluable.
    Whoever trusts in it won’t ever be disappointed.”

So its value is evident for all of you who have faith, but to those who don’t believe it is

    “A stone that the builders have rejected
        Which has turned out to be the stone that holds everything together.”

    “A stone that’s a stumbling block.
        And a scandalous rock.”

They were put in a position of disobedience which is how they stumbled.

    All of you are chosen people, royal members of the ordained clergy, a holy nation, a saved people, so that the redemptive acts of the one who called all of you out of the darkness, and into his wonderful light, could be proclaimed:

The Lord Be with You.

And Also with You.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to Saint John

Glory to You Lord

“Don’t get upset! Just trust in God, and also trust in me! My Father’s house has a lot of rooms in it. If this weren’t the case, then I wouldn’t tell all of you that I’m going to prepare a place for you. So if I’m going to prepare a room for you, then I’ll come back again so I can take you with me. That way all of you will be with me wherever I am and you’ll know the road I’m taking to get there.”
Thomas said to him, “Master, none of us know where it is you’re going to! So how’s it possible for us to know the road you’re taking to get there?”
Jesus said to him, “I myself am the road! And I am the truth and the life! Nobody is able to approach the Father except through me. If all of you know the kind of person I am, then you’ll also know the kind of person the Father is. So you know who he is from this moment on–you have seen him in me.”
Philip said to him, “Master, let us see the Father and that’ll be enough for us.”
Jesus said to him, “I’ve been with all of you for such a long time. Don’t you know me yet, Philip? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. So how’s it possible that you’re saying to me, ‘Let us see the Father,’ Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? I’m not telling all of you this on my own behalf, but the Father who dwells in me is doing what needs to be done. Trust me when I tell you that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. If you can’t believe this from my words alone, then believe this because of my actions.”
“Amen! Amen! I’m telling all of you that anyone who believes in the deeds that I am doing will do even greater things than what I’ve done because I am going to the Father.
