CATHOLIC (NON MASS) WEDDING

CATHOLIC (NON MASS) WEDDING

ENTRANCE

After the entrance song, the priest and the faithful remain standing and make the sign of the cross, as the priest says:

GREETING

Leader:    In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit

    People:    Amen.

Leader:    May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the presence of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

    People:    And also with you.

Sentences of Scripture

The minister calls the people to worship, either before or after the entrance, using one of the following, or another appropriate verse from Scripture.

    God is love,
and those who abide in love,
    abide in God,
and God abides in them (1 John 4:16).

    This is the day that the lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it (Ps. 118:24).

Statement on the Gift of Marriage

    The minister says:

We gather in the presence of God
to give thanks for the gift for marriage,
to witness the joining together of _________ and __________
to surround them with our prayers,
and to ask Godís blessing upon them,
so that they may be strengthened for their life together
and nurtured in their love for God.

God created us male and female,
    and gave us marriage
so that husband and wife may help and comfort each other,
living faithfully together in plenty and in want,
    in joy and in sorrow,
    in sickness and in health,
    throughout all their days.

    God gave us marriage
for the full expression of the love between a man and a woman.
In marriage a woman and a man belong to each other,
    and with affection and tenderness
freely give themselves to each other.

    God gave us marriage
for the well-being of human society,
for the ordering of family life,
and for the birth and nurture of children.

God gave us marriage as a holy mystery
in which a man and a woman are joined together,
    and become one,
just as Christ is one with the church.

In marriage, husband and wife are called to a new way of life,
created, ordered, and blessed by God.
This way of life must not be entered into carelessly,
    or from selfish motives,
    but responsibly, and prayerfully.

We rejoice that marriage is given by God,
blessed by our Lord Jesus Christ,
and sustained by the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, let marriage be held in honor by all.

Prayer

    Let us pray;

    Gracious God,
you are always faithful in your love for us.
Look mercifully upon ____________ and ___________,
who have come seeking your blessing.
Let your Holy Spirit rest upon them
    so that with steadfast love
they may honor the promises they make this day,
    through Jesus Christ our Savior.

    Amen.

        The congregation may be seated.

(HYMN)

THE RITE OF MARRIAGE

Priest:    My dear friends, you have come together in this place so that the Lord may seal and strengthen your love in the presence of the churchís minister and this community. Christ abundantly blesses this love. He has already consecrated you in baptism and now he enriches and strengthens you by a special sacrament so that you may assume the duties of marriage in mutual and lasting fidelity. And so, in the presence of this assembly, which is mystically joined with all believers in all times and places, the holy church of our Lord Jesus Christ, I ask you to state your intentions.

The priest then questions them about their freedom of choice, faithfulness to each other.

The priest says to the groom:

Priest:    _____________(groom) have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourself to ___________(bride) in marriage?

            The groom says:

    Groom:     I do.

            The priest continues:

Priest:    Will you love and honor her for the rest of your life?

            The groom responds:

    Groom:    I Will

The priest says to the bride:

Priest:    ___________(bride) have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourself to ____________(groom) in marriage?

            The bride says:

    Bride:    I do.

            The priest continues:

Priest:    Will you love and honor him for the rest of your life?

            The bride responds:

    Bride:    I Will

    CONSENT

Priest:    Since it is your intention to enter into marriage, join your right hands, and declare your consent before God and his church.

            The bridegroom says:

Groom:    I,_________________ take you _______________, to be my wife. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.

            The bride says:

Bride:    I,_________________ take you _______________, to be my husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.

Priest:    You have declared your consent before the church. May the lord in his goodness strengthen your consent and fill you both with his blessings. What God has joined together, let no one separate.

    People:    Amen.

    BLESSING AND EXCHANGE OF RINGS

Priest:    May the Lord bless + these rings which you give to each other as the sign of your love and fidelity.

    People:    Amen.

The bridegroom places his wifeís ring on her finger. He says:

Groom:    ___________, take this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The bride places her husbandís ring on his finger. She says:

Bride:    ___________, take this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

    NUPTIAL BLESSING

Priest:    My dear friends, let us turn to the Lord and pray that God will bless with his grace ___________________ (woman) now married in Christ to ______________ (man) and that God will unite in love the couple he has joined in this holy bond.

Father, by your power you have made everything out of nothing. In the beginning your created the universe and made humankind in your own likeness. You gave man the constant help of woman so that man and woman should no longer be two, but one flesh, and you teach us that what you have united may never be divided.

Father, you have made the union of man and wife so holy a mystery that it symbolizes the marriage of Christ and the church.

Father, by your plan man and woman are united, and married life has been established as the one blessing that was not forfeited by original sin or washed away in the flood.

Look with love upon this woman, your daughter, now joined to her husband in marriage. She asks your blessing. Giver her the grace of love and peace. May she always follow the example of the holy women whose praises are sung in the Scriptures. My her husband put his trust in her and recognize that she is his equal and the heir with him to the life of grace. May he always honor her and love her as Christ loves his bride, the church.

Father, keep them always true to your commandments. Keep them faithful in marriage and let them be living examples of Christian life.

Give them the strength which comes from the gospel so that they may be witnesses of Christ to others. May they live to see their childrenís children. And after a happy old age, grant them fulness of life with the saints in the Kingdom of Heaven.

We ask this though Christ our Lord.

    People:    Amen.

    SOLEMN BLESSING

Priest:    May God, the Almighty Father, give you joy and bless you.

    People:    Amen.

Priest:    May the only Son of God have mercy on you and help you in good times and in bad.

    People:     Amen.

Priest:    May the Holy Spirit of God always fill your hearts with love.

    People:    Amen.

Priest:    And may Almighty God bless you all, the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.

    People:    Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF MARRIAGE

            The priest addresses the people:

Priest:    Before God and in the presence of this assembly, _____________ and ___________ have made their solemn vows to each other. They have confirmed their promises by the joining of hands (and by the giving and receiving of rings).

Therefore, by the power invested in me by Almighty God, I proclaim that _____________ and ______________ are now husband and wife.
