Baptism (Gerneric Christian)

    Leader:    Brothers and sisters,
            through the sacrament of Baptism
we share in the death and the resurrection of Christ,
and are incorporated into Christís holy church.
Baptism proclaims the faith of the church.
By the sign of water God cleanses from sin, renews life,
and prefigures the reconciliation of all things promised in Christ.
In baptism we are given the Holy Spirit as a pledge of this reconciliation.
The same Spirit binds us to each other
and joins us to Christís ministry of love, peace and justice.

Leader:    Hear these words of our Lord Jesus Christ:

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you all always, even to the end of the age.
Hear also these words from Holy Scripture:
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you all were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.
As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore, we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
The promise is for you, for your children and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls.

Leader:    Obeying the word of our Lord Jesus, and confident of his promises, we baptize those whom God has called, let us all remember with joy our own baptism as we celebrate this sacrament.

Leader:    The candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented.

Parent:    I present ______________. to receive the sacrament of baptism.

Leader:    Putting your whole trust in the grace and love of Jesus Christ, do you desire to have your child baptized?

    Parent:    I do.

Leader:    Will you be responsible for nurturing the child you present in the faith and life of the Christian community?

Parent:    I will with Gods help.

Leader:    Will you, by your prayers and witness, help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ?

Parent:    I will with Gods help.

Leader:    Those of you who are witnesses, friends and family, children of God, will you all promise to uphold and support ______________ in his/her life in Christ?

People:    We will with Godí help

Leader:    The Lord be with you all

    People:    And also with you

Leader:    Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People:    It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Leader:    Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe, ruler of heaven and earth. You are the source of light and life for all of creation. In your goodness you nourish and sustain all living things by the gift of water.

In the beginning of time, your Spirit moved over the watery chaos, calling forth order and life.
In the time of Noah, you destroyed evil by the waters of the flood, giving righteousness and justice a new beginning.
You led Israel out of slavery through the water of the Red Sea, into the freedom of the promised land.
In the waters of the Jordan Jesus was baptized by John and anointed with your Spirit. By the baptism of his own death and resurrection, Christ set us free from sin and death, and opened the way to eternal life.
We thank you, O God, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. From it we are raised to share in his resurrection, through it we are reborn by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Send your Spirit to move over this water that it may by a fountain of deliverance and rebirth. Wash away the sin of the one who is cleansed by it. Raise her to new life, and graft her to the body of Christ. Pour out your Spirit upon her that she may have power to do your will, and continue forever in the risen life of Christ. To you Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, be all praise, honor and glory now and forever.  Amen.

Leader:    Through baptism we enter the covenant that God has established. Within this covenant God gives us new life, guards us from evil, and nurtures us in love. In embracing that covenant, we choose whom we will serve, by turning from evil and turning toward Jesus Christ.

As God embraces you within the covenant, I ask you to reject sin, to profess your faith in Jesus Christ, and to confess the faith of the church, the faith in which we baptize.
Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you renounce all evil and powers in the world which defy Godís justice and love?
    Parent:    I renounce them
Leader:    Do you renounce the ways of sin that separate you from God?
    Parent:        I renounce them
Leader:    Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Lord and Savior?
    Parent:    I do.

Leader:    Let us confess together the faith of the church.

            Do you trust in God?

People:    I trust in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Leader:    Do you trust in Jesus Christ?

People:    I trust in Jesus Christ, Godís only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Leader:    Do you trust in the Holy Spirit?

People:    I trust in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the fellowship of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the flesh, and the life everlasting. Amen.
